Lateral Movement of Cations in corn Leaves.
Migration patterns of nutrient elements, viz. (59)Fe, (54)Mn, (65)Zn, and (86)Rb, supplied to young corn (Zea mays) leaves were studied using a modified chromatogram scanner. It was found that the isotopes supplied to one-half of the leaf did not migrate to the other side across the midrib, but moved generally toward the base of the applied part of the leaf.

Phosphorus in a solution has a marked suppressing action on calcium emission, when the solution is sprayed in a flamephotometer. To illustrate this point, a set of 10 standards was made up. Each standard contained 18 p.p.m. CaO, which is equivalent to 0.3 . per cent CaO on plant tissue when 150 mg. of dry material is dissolved in 25 ml. of extract. This is an average calcium value to be expecte...
متن کاملLateral gas diffusion inside leaves.
Diffusion of CO2 inside leaves is generally regarded to be from the substomatal cavities to the assimilating tissues, i.e. in the vertical direction of the leaf blades. However, lateral gas diffusion within intercellular air spaces may be much more effective than hitherto considered. In a previous work it was demonstrated that, when 'clamp-on' leaf chambers are used, leaf internal 'CO2 leakage'...
متن کاملPhotosynthetic path of carbon dioxide in spinach and corn leaves.
The primary route of COn incorporation in C-4 plants (corn) has been formulated to be fi-carboxylation catalyzed by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, while in C-3 plants (spinach) COZ enters the carboxyl carbon of glycerate 3-phosphate after reacting with ribulose 1,5-diphosphate. Detached leaf tissues of spinach and corn were compared with respect to their fixation of CO* in the dark or in the ...
متن کاملLateral movement of auxin in phototropism.
Lateral movement of indoleacetic acid-1-(14)C in corn coleoptiles was measured as radioactivity moving laterally following unilateral application of the auxin. The data suggest that there is an endogenous lateral movement of auxin, and that phototropic stimulation of the coleoptile depresses lateral movement towards the light and enhances lateral movement away from the light. The lateral moveme...
